The fashion blogs are all a twitter (literally) about the Isabel Toledo line for Payless shoes (thanks Refinery 29) that are due out in September. She’s having an editor’s lunch today to unveil more of the collection. The only mini-glimpse we currently have is this little sketch of one of the planned designs and a sketch apparently showing them in action—apparently they are meant for Carmen San Diego when she leaves the hat at home.
You have to admire though that it seems like Toledo is really going after her own aesthetic with this Payless line instead of just pumping out cute crowd-pleasers (Lela Rose) or trendy heels (Chrisitan Siriano). Toledo has always made her own way, the one time she tried to take over a mainstream label (Anne Klein in 2007), she left after a year—she wasn’t meant for the corporate fashion world. And apparently she isn’t bowing this time to Payless bigwigs who would probably like easy sells with her name slapped on them. Well, they picked the wrong girl, but PC thinks it will turn out just right.
$169.90 was $225 at Koko & Palenki
PC likes a good magic show and designers apparently do too. There seems to be a slew of new frocks that can play tricks on the eyes (you’d barely know there was a pleat on this Leifsdottir dress that front diamond matches up so well).
Leifsdottir harlequin dress $172 (was $258)
Knit Dress $68
Striped Mini $48
Strapless Striped Dress $158
$138.60 (was $231) at 80’s Purple
$60 (was $175) at Neiman Marcus
PC doesn’t find running fun (and finds whoever does think its fun to be something of a masochistic), so she must devise little games in her head to keep her entertained. Her latest favorite is: Guess the sex! Since the fashions in my hipster neighborhood have become so androgynous—skinny jeans, plaid shirts, boat shoes—its hard to tell if it was a male or female who just zoomed by PC on a fixed gear bike.
But if PC has learned anything, whatever people are wearing in her neighborhood now, the rest of the world will be wearing in 6 months. So some basics:
Cropped or rolled jeans—cause they’re better for biking:
Cropped black Levis $79.50
Blank denim pants $75
Vintage Levi boyfriend $138
Shoes that might look like you stole them from your slightly gay brother’s closet:
Hayden tie-dyed espadrille $89.95
LLBean Boat Mocs $49.95
Bronx Oxfords $119
Button down shirts in that classic Ralph Lauren style—so no frilly sleeves, asymmetric buttons, or straight hems.
Rag & Bone denim shirt $175
Flannel mens shirt $9.99 (was $39.50)
White button-down $40 (was $59)
$599 (was $995) in gray at Intermix
*PC realizes this is still a very expensive jacket, but half of the women she knows have been lusting after this jacket since it came out. Finally a boutique out there has cracked and reduced the price.
The hump day just got a whole lot better. Starting today, Gap stores are making Wednesdays a little more bearable by offering 40% off one regular priced in store item. A few things PC recommends using it on:
Striped boatneck sweater $44.50 (Vogue dedicated a whole page in their May issue to the reemergence of the classic navy and white striped top.)
Time-honored western denim shirt with pearl buttons $54.50
Shrunken schoolboy blazer (perfect for pairing with that boatneck sweater) $98
Beach-perfect lightweight hoodie $34.50
Weekend friendly striped tunic (must be worn with skinny jeans or leggings to avoid looking like mom) $39.50
Simple, super comfortable ballet flats (PC owns these in copper and a sunset orange) $39.50
$90.99 (were $152) at Piperlime
